Well its not a 69 its a 70 model year built in 69 (normal practise was to start next years model just after the summer hols) so you go by the 70 parts book and cataloques when restoring.

The tank is not mounted correctly and tipped forward, possibly by the glassfibre oil tank cover which is for 69's and earlier only, it does not fit as the 70 oil tank has a lowered oil cap to stop people hitting their inner thigh on it when kicking (and don't ask me how I know).

The rear mudguard is all wrong and the mudguard brace is missing, seat is off something else or a universal etc etc.

What is correct is in good nick so a good start.

But what the hell is that headlamp wink

Nice pics Shane. I notice a few things with the twin. It has the aftermarket barrel and the front end is more 1969/70.

Is there a chance more of the bike is 1969 or are you satisfied that it is indeed a 1968 model ?
There is a difference in hardware threads introduced about that time.

Why, Y, Dash Y..

Hi Kommando and Dave, thanks Kommando for clarifying and Dave you are right as KOM mentioned 441 SS built late 69 – 70 model. A50 built late 68 – 69 model. Yeah the SS has quite a few mix n match pieces to say the least. Thanks for the heads up on the tank and I have no Ideas what you mean about the inner thigh (LOL!)

The SS was owned by the prev owner for 20 odd years and his Father in Law owned it before him. The FIL custom made the headlight himself out of stainless (For the life of me I don’t know why. And the side covers have been made by him also out of Fibreglass it is all one piece.

Kommando , Are the side covers for this model black? Did this model come with a tool box?

Can anyone recommend a good book as a reference so that I don’t have to annoy everyone with stupid little questions on the forum?

Cheers guys and thanks for the input really appreciate it.

For the 70 B44SS and only for the 70 version of the SS (VS was different) the oil tank was uncovered, the tangs the previous fibreglass cover attached to via oddie clips was deleted, on the toolbox side the sculptured fibreglass cover was replaced by a simple metal cover. A much better arrangement and these are the parts I have obtained to make my 69 look like a 70.

Depends on the market, home was lower but yours look ok for US, my UK bike came with US bars.

The sidecover and oil tank decals were a 1 year only deal.

Ignore the red background as its clear and will show the black behind.

The book you need if you want to be at home with your B 44
is The Ruper Ratio Unit Single Engine manual
You can buy this from dealers no this site most carry it.

Also worth getting is a copy of Kim Whites BSA DVD, also available without leaving this site.
Some of Kim's scans are iffy and the lack of a decent index can make it a pain but for the price of 1 origial parts book you all of the B44 factory service books and most of the parts books for B44's plus enough other models to have you happy in your garage till the day they drag you out in a box

For a B44 no need for the Kim DVD, just go to

http://www.bsaunitsingles.com/Archive_home.htm

and all you need is there.

Rupert Ratio is a must for the engine.
