Mate of mine has had the kind of luck that always happens to the other bloke!
Working at a house in London today he came across and bought a brace of Mag/Dynamo 600 Dominators.
Both in barn find condition, one is bone stock standard and bears the following engine numbers;
69620 14L on the left of the badge and 99 1512 to the right.
The other is a period Cafe Racer complete with John Tickle 2LS front brake and top yoke. The numbers on this are
80992 14P and 99C 2703

Not sure where to look for frame numbers on a Featherbed, or indeed, whether they should match the motor.

Not a lot of information I know, but can anybody have a stab at the possible years.

The frame numbers will be on the nearside (left looking forward)gusset plate between the swing arm bolt nut and the top brace nut As for the engine numbers, (which would originally have matched the serial number), the older one is a 1956, as denoted by L, the newer 1959 (for P).The '59 should have an alternator, not dynamo.
Good Luck!

Cheers for the info O-R, you're right the '59 is alternator, I was getting carried away with green eyed enthusiasm!
Does the C after the 99 have any relevance?
I'll get a couple of pictures on here a little later on this evening.

Brian

C is for Coil Ignition, via a distributor,
you're welcome.
Cheers,
Niall

My mate has just been on and says he can't find numbers on the gusset plates of either bike. Is there an alternative place to look? As you can see by the photos, the '56 has almost definitely never been tampered with, so if it was there it should be visible.

As oilyrag says, the frame number will be on the flat gusset plate on the drive side by your left foot if you were to sit on it. They would be stacked in a vertical fashion. Beautiful find. They're still out there.

You might need to scrape any paint off and depending on if / where the restarts are drilled through the gusset some of the numbers might have been drilled. The numbers can be quite faint but they'll be there, somewhere.....

1958 Triumph 650 Speed Twin
1958 Velocette Viper
1959 Norton 650SS bitsa
1961 BSA Bantam D1

The'56 has given up her secrets, the number is there as predicted, and correct.
The Cafe Racer though does not, and that's with the plate back to bare metal! Period build on a new frame rather than an existing bike conversion perhaps?

Anyway, the '56 has gone on the bay of fools 1956 Norton Dominator 99.
Somebody has said that 56 was the first year of the 99 is that correct?

More likely nicked and the numbers removed to hide the fact.

Yeah that is of course a possibility but I ain't so sure. The surface of the metal on the gusset is pristine. I can't see how, given the location of the number, it could be ground out and no trace of the act remains.

Need to pic of the steering head area to say for certain.

But if it has numbers like you quoted, can't be.
It does appear to be a bolt-up 53 or 54 wideline.
