Hello chaps,

I am helping my oldest brother rebuild a 1960 Dominator 600SS which has been in the family since another brother bought it when it was 1 year old.

The other brother had it in mind to rebuild it when he was retired, but illness and an affair with fast Japanese and Italian bikes meant he never got round to it before he died. He was my mentor and helped me with my first bike build in 1969 so I want to do this right in his memory.

My question is in the title; having a Norton basket case to rebuild is difficult when I never owned one back in the day, so I need to gather as much detailed information as possible to be sure the bike goes back together right.

Can anyone point me to a publication that at least shows the detail like a Triumph manual does? I believe the 600SS was not so common so I hope I don't have to end up guessing!

All help will be appreciated.

TIA.

This should get you started. There is a manual for the '60-'68 models.
http://www.classicbike.biz/Norton/Repair/NortonRepair.htm
http://www.classicbike.biz/Norton/Parts/NortonParts.htm

Unfortunately the parts lists only go back as far as '61, but you should be able to get an illustrated '59-'60 list plus a '60 unillustrated parts supplement from BMS.

Hey thanks for your kindness guys!

The new bike lift arrives for the job on Wednesday so work starts soon after.

Bob: I'm just down the road from you in Rochester now.

Possm: Nice picture story.

Question: My brother says there seems to be something missing from the oil pipe connection hardware (return side) at the oil tank? I haven't been able to get there to look at it but I wondered if it is a take-off to the rockers or summat? Doubtless it will be in the information on those links above, but I thought it worth an ask now.

Should be a banjo supplying low pressure feed to head, try to get one from a 250 to improve the flow to the usually dry rockers!!.

The 650ss resto is very impressive,Not sure that the header pipes are the correct shape or diameter, they were usually more angular and small bore (in the UK), the pattern looks more like Atlas, perhaps the AMC factory settled on one style for both, No matter as i much prefer that old style curved pipe (very similar to the very first dommy),That curved shape is also what the 99 should have, but is not always supplied.Don't think pipes are made in the uk now,but bought in. .The slotted headlamp ears are also an AMC part, shared with the commando, not fitted to the early 650's.

Hello,

I can only speak for the Commando where Andover Norton is the best parts supplier. They are a bit more expensive, but the quality is much better than it used to be for e.g. Triumph parts, where you often have to be satisfied with Chinese parts.

Hi Ralf,

Cheers, I know of Andover Norton - expensive but good so that's OK.

Hi Blap---good to see that you are back living in Gods own country.
Wondered how long you would be able to stand living in Frog land.
BTW--what oil supply and filtration system are you going to fit to the Dommie?

Hi Blap,

I am in contact with Joe Seifert and he told me that they are well sorted in mechanical parts for the 600. Sheet metal components (e.g. mudguards) could be a problem.

Hi Richard, hope you're well. I will be rebuilding the Dommie with and for my oldest brother - he wants it standard and with patina in place so minimal refinishing and modifications are the likely outcome. However, if yous guys know of any important mods that will make it more reliable (like the rocker feed off the Jubilee), I'd like to hear of them.

Ralf: Fortunately the original rolled edge deep valance mudguards are in pretty good shape so that's not a problem - I'll bear the rest in mind, thanks for asking.
