Based on the numbers stamped on the motor case and what I could find on the net it says its a 1971 Firebird scrambler. If memory serves its stamped A65FS HE then a series of numbers(production). If Im wrong Id be greatful for some info from someone who knows more. I have a ton of questions about this bike Ive fallen for! Mainly carb questions for now though.

[quote=smitty][Linked Image] [/quote This really reminds me of the 69 Lightning I had. It was the same color. When the crate was opened the original tank was damaged. The dealer asked if the FS tank would be OK. I always thought it looked better.

Yes please. I don't know if our painters can read your codes, but that is a gorgeous color.

The 66 Spitfire is starting to look like a Spitfire again. Albeit my version of one. I've had this tank sitting in the barn for 3 years now. Figured it was time to put it on. As soon as I have the extra cash and find a rear alloy rim I will put the 190 front brake on it and both alloy rims. The rim on the brake is pretty wobbly but the shop seems to think it will straighten out in the truing wheel.... That might be as far as I take it then.

This is the same black bike I posted earlier in this thread but it looked like a black Lightning then.

Oh and at some point I will make the fenders match and put on the correct 66 tail light that I have. And get rid of the chrome fork legs too... who am I kidding these things are never done laughing

Wade,

I am so glad you posted pics of your Spitfire !! I really like the Black & White color scheme. IMO, the only thing I would do is get a chrome rear fender and I would call it done! Otherwise and even now, it is absolutely beautiful !!

Thanks Jon, That is close to my plan.
1. Fender (need one)
2. correct taillight (already have)
3. and the alloy rims. (Have front need rear)

Then I will call it done. It may take me a while but I am not ashamed to ride it as is till then and it does run good now....

That will be the plan Rich. Lord willing and the creeks don't rise....

Actually I just realized that I might have a rear fender too. No holes and not sure if its the right one. I do believe its BSA fender but I need to be sure its not for a Hornet. I would hate to drill holes in a rare fender.

Wade,
Are you sure that your bike is a '66 Spitfire? I ask because it has a later year valve cover, later sidecovers, wrong rims, and wrong front brake. Nice looking bike though. I too like the black Spitfire tank.

Everything was wrong on this bike when I got it. Including the ape handle bars. I had no intention of restoring it but as time goes on I just keep adding things to bring it back to a spitfire look. Mostly because I like the look. It would be cheaper to buy one already done but where is the fun in that. Just removed the all red wiring harness that had more short circuits then a nut house and replaced it with a new British Wiring harness. Seems better now so far. All of the other parts like side covers and tank and other parts I had laying around. It will never be a rivet counters restoration but it is a matching numbers Spitfire and it will look nice and be ridden hard... Thats the plan and I am sticking to it. :bigt

in the last pic I thought you were drooling. Took a good minute to see the shades.
Nice bike, the stock 8" front brake is probably better stopper than the 190mm full mirth hub. Aesthetically the tank seat line looks a bit hump backed, some foam stuffed under the front tank tunnel would correct that, maybe its just the camera lens.

No Gavin, Its not the camera. I think the same thng about the tank. I will sort that out along with adding the needed bracket under the front as well. I do drool sometimes but I photoshop that out of my photos wink

Drat!
I'd have traded you a shortened fender for that stock length one....

Too many fenders have already been altered, and there are no more originals being made... 'Replica's', sure, but no more originals.

Otherwise, it appears you ARE having fun with your boik!
Brett

P.S. If that is a true BSA single seat pan, you might want to get a tracing from it before you have it upholstered, there may be folks online that may want a copy, so they can try to get a seat pan made!

I'd like to have a tracing! Talk about a unique piece! I'd try to put one on my Hornet, and maybe one on the Fire Bird...

Brett,

I think we have determined that it is a modified tandem seat pan. It is too long to look like the seat drawing in the parts book. And no way to mount the original without frame mods.
