I'm getting ready for the winter and lining up projects so I don't get too depressed. I always thought about how ugly the stock tail light looks on my 78 T140 looks. I was wondering if anyone had success replacing it with something that looks better. It would be nice if I could use or cover up the fender holes from the stock light and not have to drill others. If it gets to that I would pick up a used fender to modify since my fenders are in great condition and I don't want to do anything to them that's irreversable. Thanks!

That's a hard one to answer - like asking what I should eat for dinner tonite. What style are you interested in? retro, antique, early triumph? You might try an eBay search for tail lights, or custom tail lights, and get an idea. I put a side mount on my Bonnie, and used some small carriage bolts, painted to match to cover up the holes - doesn't look that bad.

You're right about the stock T140 tail light, it's a monstrosity. One of these days I'm going to mount this mid 60s BSA light on mine:

I've mocked it up, and it looks great. I'll have to drill one hole at the grab rail, the existing hole will be covered by the new light, and I'll have to extend the backing plate about an inch so the license plate holes match the T140 fender. This is one of my winter projects too.

RE: dinner. I'm going for pork chops and mashed potatoes. I highly recommend you do the same.

I have some 60's bits on the bike now, side covers, bars, silencers. I guess it would stand to reason to get an earlier looking Lucas style. I like the one the other poster suggested.

That BSA unit is a nice light. I've had it on my pre-unit Bonnie for ages, but the size of the circular boss means pushing the large UK number plate down so it overlaps the bottom of the mounting plate.

I'm looking to replace it with the stock pre-unit Lucas item just to avoid that problem. Shame.

That BSA unit is nice.

I re-profiled the stock T140E one so it sat up to give a more 'perky' look. I also had to rework the brackets to make the number plate slope forwards towards the top. Fiddly work, but looks good now.
