Hi,

How much, if it isn't a rude question?

Btw, 'J' is '74, not '73. wink

Regards,

Yep,that's a 74. Same month as the one I used to own.
73 paint scheme though.

Congrats, a nice acquisition.

Curiously, possibly not:-

. some '74 were turned out with '73-style red tank flashes - there has been some discussion about this over on the TOL forum and it seems to be too many to just be a collection of individual owners repainting their tanks individually. Possibly a batch of '73 tanks removed from Meriden when the blockade was lifted?

Hth.

I have his older brother. GJ40124, it wasn't no where near that nice when I got it though. Does the engine turn over?

Yeah the Engine is free and has good compression, the guy I bought it from was 70+ years old and he parked it when it was still running, he stopped riding because it was kick start and he didn't want to hurt his hip and knee... That would interfere with is driving of his Stock car that he still races...

Post some more pictures since you got her running. Did you clean the dust off her yet and take that sissy bar off? The inside of the gas tank looks good, how did the outside come out after you washed and polished the paint? I picked up this one for $1800, a 73'non runner. The inside of the gas tank & carb bowls, petcocks were nasty, but after a day of cleaning she fired up. Sounds like an animal with the 3 into one, but my system slightly hits the oil cooler. i'm waiting on missing oil cooler rubbers before runing her again and picked up a stock manifold in case I want to go to stock. Have a real nice gas tank for my 73'. Good luck in your resurrection!!! Post more pics!

Nice find BSANORTON!!!Whats your plans for yours... just a restore or??? Sorry but No I haven't had the time to get the Trident cleaned up, I washed it but have yet found the time to polish, I was planning on it last weekend but made the mistake of asking the girlfriend if she wanted to do something....I did make the mistake of trying the petcocks without really looking at them and broke one then the other, they were varnished up pretty good and not knowing they were plastic as well as them being dryrotted it didn't take much...Replacements on the way though....I kinda like the Sissy bar....kidding..... Picturs will follow I promise....

LOL! I know how that goes! I was playing nurse maid to my family all weekend, some funky virus going around here. Was able to sneak a few hours into the garage. Thanks for the comments. I'd like to clean her up a bit more, but after going to a really nice local Concourse show, I'd rather have something mechanically sound and be able to ride hard on weekends than be bike I have to worry about getting scratched up and rolling in & out of shows! I have a few nice looking bikes, but ride them all. I picked up a nice pair of replacement fork leg assemblies, need to bead blast the front disc, need a seat cover and would like European handlebars and tires. Besides deciding on a exhaust system not too much more. It was a non runner and I flushed out the gas tank, cleaned the petcocks, disassemblied the carbs and cleaned. Placed a new battery in & she fired up! Post pics of yours soon!

Looks like a good deal on a good project! I hear those bikes can be a little complex to work on; let us know what you find inside ....

Well we had a rain out at work about 9 am today , after I took care of a few thing odds and ends I figured nothing better to do on a rainy day so I started the clean up and polishing of the Trident... mainly just the Chrome...Some before and Afters

Heres what all the chrome looked like overall, except for the exhaust which had rust on it....

Just the Turtle Wax Chrome polish, I tried the Mothers Mag Cleaner But it didn't seem to cut the Oxidation on the covers as well as the Turtle Wax....Since its going to be raining again this weekend I think i'm going to try to change out the forks and do alittle more polishing....

Keep us updated with pictures! I'm planning to bring my bike to someone this weekend who can make up a 3 into 1 system for me. I'm getting a stock system also just in case. The guy has met Tom Mellor at Bonneville and actually was thinking of doing a similiar system on mine very close to a BUB system from what he saw. He created the below system on the Norton. The swap out of my front forks will have to wait.

You folks have found some real bargains. I just got one that came apart 30 years ago, a 72 I believe. I'll look forward to learning about the foibles from this forum.

Very lucky find guys, mine took more than a can of wax and polish to get in a decent state.
Cookie, welcome to this forum , nice to see another Trident in Regal Purple, very few were sold in this color over here.

Thank you for the welcome Peter, I also have a Norton and I know Stuart a bit from a Norton board. I hope to get this bike as nice as yours eventually but as mentioned it will take more than a coat of wax. I usually work on two bikes at a time for projects over the winter and the Triumph is going to come up along with a 75 Goldwing.

Hey Cookie ~

That sure is a 72 model Trident.. the front brake can be bloody scary if not set up ~ My 72 BSA A65L had the same and it useless~

But don't be fooled they CAN be set to work great with a little handy tweaking.. (Ian M on 'The List ', can advise as he is a whiz on this issue!

Ian lent me his 72 Bonnie for the first Aust Triples Down Under Rally and the thing nearly threw me over the front as I was expecting a weak as *** front brake, but I was wrong!)

Peter R ~ those mufflers make a nice note too.. for essentially a standard muffler~ but Not as sweet as the T120 mufflers on my Special ~

Indeed, these conical (or"comical") hub type front brakes were often critisized for their poor braking action, however, in my experience this brake works fine, even on a relatively heavy machine like a Trident. In the end it all depends on the correct setup of the brake.
These brakes can be upgraded by fitting 1-inch longer brake lever arms, although I am happy with the standard set-up on my Trident.

I've never tried the conical hub brake. The Bonnie 750 we had around had a disc if I recall. I run what may be the earlier Bonnie front on my Chang and with new shoes and a proper set up she has been good on that heavy rig.
Once I get this bike running I'll see how much I like riding it, and if I want to use it every day I may just pop for the extended brake arms. I have three drum brake bikes and you have to treat them with respect here in traffic. The Norton can get the front brake to smoke in the hills here. Organic shoes are nice but...
