I am curious as to how many ZB GS machines are out there. The GS world is very high on the later CB/DB/DBD but it must be remembered that the ZB units really got the success going for the marque.

The GSOC records have only a small number of ZB in the Club as compared to the big fin engines.

There must be a few ZB machines out there.

This is a dry mockup of one that I am using to sort out the cycle bits before painting anything.

Fred: That is a nice looking engine for sure. What cams did you put into it?

I have eng# ZB34GS.134. GSOC records show it shipped to Rich Child May 24 '49. The odd thing is the engine test certificate they sent was dated Jan 15 '53. I may eventually fit it a '52 rolling chassis I have. Even though I have several big fin Goldies,I really like the looks of the early bikes.

Gordo,

FWIW, I have two complete ZB's, one is a work in progress, the other is my road racer I have been riding in AHRMA events since the early 90's. It was a factory racer imported by Rich Child, blown up at Daytona by John Long Sr. in the 1950 practice session, then sold to Harley Sanderson who put Phil Peterson aboard in 51, 52, and 53 and finished pretty well for a privateer.

I always keep my eyes open for any spare heads or cylinders. If anyone runs into something, please let me know.

Well there's two more now isn't there Gordo. Mine and Wades.
It really is quite amazing how few ZB's there are about. Or are they all just in hiding?(or blown up).
What is the situation with the crankshafts in the ZB's. Are they as self destructive as the later engines. Or are they worse? frown
How do the engines compare with the later DBD's? Much down on power?
How about the handling with the plungers? So many questions and so little info available. It's driving me nut's! crazy
That might have something to do with the waiting for the bike to arrive from Cal.

We are restoring one for a friend in Florida, its a '52. It was deliverd in boxes but looking like a nice bike now..Should
have it finished early this summer.. We also have plans to build a rigid ZB for racing..
Handling? The plungers are great!! I have raced the ZB that Stu has, and it really goes well. I have never been on a bike that will change lines mid corner like that plunger ZB.. However in stock trim, ground clearance is a problem.. We have fixed most of that on Stu's ZB, but now the clutch cover is touching down!!

Mark: The power of the ZB GS engines was quite modest as compared to the later engines. I have the remains of engine ZB34 GS 4014 that was despatched to Hap Alzina in Nov 51 in a ZB31 S plunger frame. This record is not in the GS despatch records but is in the Competition Despatch records.

I have a copy of the engine Certificate of Engine Performance for this engine and with 65-2438 inlet cam, 65-2436 exhaust cam, 1 5/32 inch TT carb and 49 inch straight pipe it gave just over 30.4 hp at 5800 rpm.

I am not sure what tuning those cams would give.

Jake: Is the 52 engine a 4000 or 5000 series engine?

Gordo your not going to believe this but my engine # is ZB 34 GS 40xx. 2 off yours! It is also in a ZB31 S frame # 12xxx. So that's three ZB's with 31 S frames which are supposed to be for non Goldstar engines. Too much of a coincidence? Or lot's of written off frames?

Mark: It seems there were quite a few 'Scrambles' machines made with using a ZB31 S frame and either an iron ZB34, alloy ZB33A or the alloy ZB34GS engine. It seems like the dirt bikes did not get the GS ZB32S frames. Maybe they kept the ZB32S frames for the Clubman models. I would expect that these machines came without a dynamo or lights and with a lower price tag.

Given that the competition machines were recorded in different and separate despatch records there must have been a totally separate production line.

Hap Alzina had a big influence on the USA market and most likely ordered exactly what people would buy. The was no point in buying a Clubman if you were just going to take all the extra bits off to make it into a dirt bike.

I think the only difference between a ZB31S and a ZB32S frame, are lugs for the rear set controls. Obviously on a scrambler, you wern't going to use rear sets. The front frame sections for all B31-B32-B33-B34's and all Gold Stars rigid and sprung all had the same part number.

BritTwit: That said, how many part numbers are there for the rear sections of the frames both rigid and plunger and GS and other?

BSA part numbers as follows:
65-4511 All B31-B32-B33-B34 rigid rear sections
65-4526 All plunger frame rear sections (no lugs for rear sets or brake)
65-4547 All plunger Gold Star rear sections (R/L lugs for rear sets) (L/lug for brake pedal)

Good stuff Jake and Gordo and Britwit. Sometimes I feel like Sherlock Holmes trying to unravel the doings of the past. Things that happened 60 years ago are not always clear. When the bike arrives I will probably contact the BSAOC to try a find out a bit about it.

Mark: I have never dealt with the BSAOC but have found that the Gold Star Owner Club (GSOC) in the UK is very good to deal with.

http://www.bsagoldstarownersclub.net/

In particular Ian Jackson, the machine registrar, is very helpful.

Thanks for the tip Gordo.
I was thinking of getting George Prew's book on Goldstar's. Do you know if it is worthwhile for the ZB's.
I have also bought a copy of D.W.Munro's motorcycle repair and maintenance. Not sure if that is the correct name as it hasn't arrived yet but a bit of a generic book that covers BSA models of the era including the Goldstars.

Mark: The Prew Gold Star book is really a must have in my mind. While the large fin engine and swingarm bits are the main thrust, the BB type engine (ZB except for the head configuration)plunger type gearbox, tin chaincase, rigid frame and plunger frame are all covered with parts diagrams. The maintenance covers all the models and frames while there is more technical info than in any other book that I have seen.

All though it's mostly big fin info, I find the Bruce Main-Smith's " The Gold Star Book" very informative. It does have an exploded view of ZB and BB motors and a section on technical information.

Mark: I should mention that the original book is as Boomer called it, 'The GOLD STAR Book' by BMS (Bruce Main-Smith Publication).

The Prew book is the same as the original except some of the photos at the back of a GS restoration example are replaced by several pages of Rocket Gold Star technical/part number info and a 1963 Nutley New Jersey BSA price list for the Gold Star 650 Twin parts. Complete frame was $180.

Fery; Phil Pearson in the UK is a good place to start. http://www.bsagoldstar.co.uk/electric_start/electric_start.htm

As well there is Len Haggis in the UK
http://goldstarbsa.com/

I have had good service from both of them.
