I'm looking at a part from an eBay store that says it is new old stock. It is way cheaper than the quoted price for a new part from two other suppliers and is even cheaper than a used price quote from the two. Does NOS necessarily mean that it is a genuine part or could it mean a new knock off from who knows where? I'm a little wary.

NOS means New Old Spare, which includes old spares that could be old rip off spares, Brit Bikes were big business and as well as genuine spares, good and bad copies were made in the same era.

Smart man to be a little wary in this case. A LOT of items I see on eBay are listed as NOS that IMO are definitely NOT. Key is to do a Vulcan mind melt with the seller by looking at the pictures and his feedback file, ask him questions then make your own judgement call and live with it.
All this aside I still enjoy eBay and use it for what it's worth. 2c

NOS. I quess the meaning depends on if you're speaking English or American. The seller has the same picture for parts with different part numbers, in this case an outer timing cover. I asked the seller about it two days ago and have not heard a word. The protective tape is still supposedly on it and and if free of major blemishes, the price sounds good. But almost too good.

Tarvin is right, it means NEW, OLD STOCK. In other words an original OEM replacement. Not a repoduction part or copy.

The seller has a 99.9 feedback score, sells lots of stuff and does say it's genuine. Genuine what may be a different story. I try and buy from names that I've seen here, or from others, and this is one that I've seen no mention of so I wasn't quite sure of it.

If it's queeng, they are very honest and reliable. I have bought LOTS of their stuff... Their prices are very "retail" (i.e. higher than what you might pay at a swap meet), but they are knowledgable and they don't misrepresent what they are selling.

If it's being sold by "queenG"...I can vouch for them too. I've made a handful of Ebuys from them. Straight shooters, for the most part. :bigt:

I've bought from them, no problems. But I've found that particularly on BSA unit singles, he tends to generalize parts applications, often incorrectly. He lists parts that only apply to, say a B25, and says they will fit 441, TR25W, B50, etc... You need to know exactly what it is that you need, I wouldn't count on his application description, at least for BSA singles.

You're probably OK on the cover...you can have him check the spindle hole size, and the points wire exit to make sure it isn't for OIF models. I think those are the only areas of concern for your bike.

Just because somthing is NOS dose not mean that it "good old stock".
A lot of parts have a shelf life so will not be usable as NOS straight off the shelf.
Then you get things that were scrap in 1965 and put aside for rectification or sale to scrap yard, eventually these find their way to the market quite correctly labelled NOS as no one living remembers that they were scrap parts originally.
