As I rode home on the weekend down the highway here in Toronto I was leaning forward, zooming along at 4,500 - 5,000 rpm at about 90-100kph (about 60 mph), when I was passed by a couple of modern bikes that raced past effortlessly. Meanwhile, I'm reluctant to push my bike over 6,000 rpm, where my speed is about 120 kph (75 mph).

If I didn't care, and wanted to simply open the throttle how fast could my 1969/70 single-carb T100S go? I know the 100 in T100 stands for 100 mph, or 160 kph, but at what rpm who that be? Must be something like 8-9,000 rpm, running downhill with wind at your back, until the push rod snapped.

Assuming twin-carb Daytona form, what would be the absolute top speed of stock (non-customized or race spec) unit-500cc T100?

Easy ton. It's definitely safe to 8500 RPM. I rode one for three hours straight at 6500 to 7000 down I5 one day. These are probably the safest high revving twins Triumph ever produced. Remember how over-square their dimensions are: 69 X 65.5 mm. Piston speed remains reasonable to 8500.

I have a Daytona (T100R). My other rides are both 750s (T140 and an Atlas). I'm always shifting the T100 around 5000. My local shop is always telling me to REV IT! Up to 7000 at least. Which seems so totally counter to what I'm used to with the 750s.

I've seen a little over 105mph on the clock that was referenced by a BMWR100 at 96mph. I haven't pulled this kind of stunt in a year or, so but I can tell you that my T100 will hit 80 em pee 'aitch +, at will. I've no idea what that amounts to on the tach as I don't have one.

That is a calculated speed if the engine could reach 7800 RPM in 4th, based on 14.2MPH per 1000RPM.
It obviously can in the other gears, but can't quite pull it in 4th.

There is a glaring error elsewhere in that photocopy.
Does anyone else see it?

P. Bob. - Mr. Boyd is right. They tested it at the old Riverside Raceway in Calif.. It just ran out of steam at 105. S Boyd - Just guessing but I believe the error you spotted was in the energy transfer/battery alternator specs.?

Was the error the 7" front tls brake, I thought the C model had a 7" and the R model had an 8"? Or not until '68?

My max speed in 3rd is pretty much my max speed in 4th too... Seems wierd, but you run it up in 3rd as high as you dare (no tach) and shift to 4th and its pretty flat :rolleyes: Might get a few more mph out of it, but usually running out of clear cop-free roadway by then.

I have ridden it at high rev's for a long time too. 2 hours at 75mph one night keeping up with a Trident on the interstate. I ended up pulling the Trident home after my buddy's chain snapped a few miles from home... LOL!

Rev it up Matthew! It will become a whole new bike to ya! Jeckyl and Hyde...

Good point Kyle.

The error I spotted was that the T100R did not have energy transfer ignition. (thank God)

I thought you were right about the brake size also, but I just looked at the 1967 brochure and it says 7" for both the C and R models.

As for not being able to wind it out in 4th, that is, as you know, overgearing. Good for cruising on the four-lane, but not for racing.

Yeah,
Just me bein stupid as usual. I did work it out mesel shortly after I posted. I think what sparked it was thinking that 105 was a bit slow for a twin carb 500 that revs like a basted.

I know a guy who races a very special 500 twin in England. His engine revs to 12000 so I'm not sure that a claim of 135 is BS? I'll ask him. He is an old guy so he will not BS us.

Hi Phattie,

No worries, I don't do BS so I have nothing to worry about.

It is Kirby Rowbotham no less. He of the nice filter kits.

His rider practices at Mallory Park most Wednesdays and he (kirby) is the builder of the bike. I can't remember the exact class of racing the bike is in, because it is so long since he told me and as I don't live in England, I can't get up to see it race too easily.

You can give him a call and he'll gladly tell you about it, but it would be nice if you could buy something as he is a busy guy! wink

Well, I certainly want to apologize if I diverted this thread away from its' original intention of what a stock T100 might run to at top end. My post of the racing spec mentioned above was really meant to suggest that turning one of these bikes as high as 9000rpm might be possible while still relying on a stock crank, rods, bearings, etc. I don't know enough about what is presently running on tracks to have a valid opinion but I recall that the factory bikes ran about 135 in the sixties-not that they resembled stock in anyway. I will be looking forward to trying mine at 8000rpm when the engine wears in a little more.

Speaking of throwing motorcycles out of airplanes, can someone explain the "terminal speed" listed as 90 mph? I fully admit having limited knowledge of physics, but I thought terminal speed was just that, "terminal" -- at which point the force of acceleration equaled the force of resistance, and that was that.
What gives?

Terminal speed in Cycle World above = speed at the termination of 1/4 mile of acceleration.

Terminal speed of you drop it from an airplane probably closer to 375 MPH.

Terminal speed in this context means at the end of the 1/8 or 1/4 mile, that's all. Terminal speed of a BSA thrown out of an airplane, however, would be the speed at which the acceleration of gravity can no longer overcome air resistance.
