The beauty of the peashooters is that they allow the engine to breathe better which you have negated by stuffing them. Why not flog 'em and buy a pair of the original quiet and restrictive silencers?

No. Not loud, nice. Can be loud on a combat commando though.

Hey,

Well I've got a moderately loud bike now that runs great. I figure that if I can't get it to run great with baffles (following SBoyd's suggestions) then I'll just live with a moderately loud bike. And yes what's loud and what's not is clearly a matter of personal preference.

In my case I live in a close neighborhood and when I come in downshifting or take off at night the sound rattles around the houses, waking the blue hairs.

Cheers, and thanks for all of your help getting me back on the road again.

Pete

There are peashooters and there are the other peashooters.

My first Commando was in 1973. The original peashooters were the perfect sound on those bikes.
Mellow, but loud enough when you pin it.
I don't know what the original construction of those was.

AFIK all that's available now are pattern types.
There are a few available, both English and Chinese.

The one's I recently bought are the most commonly available from your local BritBike dealer. They are 1 3/8 inlet only and specifically designed to bolt on to a T140. Low price and very good looking.
They are straight through, carrying the 1 3/8 inlet size right to the end.
They are way too loud for me, almost sound like TT pipes.
They come with the pre-1983 disclaimer sticker.
Don't know who makes them but they must be Chinese because the price was so low. (Emgo?)
They're not doing my image any good with the neighbors.

Stop the insanity.

How could they complain? It is afterall a British bike that makes music, not noise like those H/D's that sound like Ford tractors with a broken exhaust manifold.

I have an idea that Emgo silencers are to the original design but don't have any glass wool packing, at least in the Triumph straight through type. This makes them sound very sharp. I have some on my 650 Triumph and they are miles too loud. The glass wool makes the sound much rounder and easier on the ears. I saw a Norton with pea shooters and it was very quiet compared with my bike.
