Anyone installed a LED rear/brake light?

I've got 12V ignition with points. I'd like to install a LED rear/brake light as I ride at night and am not satisfied with the tiny Lucas original set-up. Does anyone have any experience installing and using these things?

Could I install more than just one LED back light, to make a strong impression?

I am NOT changing to electronic ignition nor changing my battery, etc. so please don't suggest that.

Thx

Matt, I have and they work great with very little current draw. The down side is if you still have the bike wired pos. ground, standard led's will not work with out some very creative wiring in the light fixture itself. You will have to make sure the LED is made for POS. ground, they are available but not easy to find. Jack

You can get 1157 LED bulbs on the internet. The other problem is the Lucas bulb faces down and not to the rear. So I don't know how much advantage there would be.

Matt,

Check out www.superbrightleds.com for direct plug in LED replacements. They make a “bulb” with an 1157 base that points in the same direction as the socket and they make a version that is 90 degrees to the socket. The only drawback is you have to convert your electrical system to NEGATIVE ground. It’s worth taking a look at their site.

HTH,

Alan

Paul Goff in the UK makes good + earth conversions, LEDs on a circuit board are great but some of the "bulb" replacements are pretty ordinary.

While a simple bulb swap may on the outset seem simple and straightforward, as the record above proves it is anything but.

There is a company called BulbsThatLast4Ever.Com and they offer a complete positive ground, tail lamp interior kit that replaces the guts of the stock Lucas tail lamp. It has an array of maybe 40 LEDs that were aimed both to the rear and down on the tag, and the total light output is BLINDING.

After owning one I'm convinced that these are the ultimate tail lamp upgrade.

As I have a late T140 with pos ground, I had no problem getting an LED tail light.

Best thing since sliced bread :bigt:

Definitely worth doing. If you're deviating from original, a twin-"bulb" setup will work fine and still draw less current than a single conventional bulb.

British Cycle Supply carries the Bulbs that Last 4ever kit. I installed one on my 78 last year and its great. No more wondering if your taillight is burned out. Took about a half hour to install. Still is positive ground.

RFW:
I understood that "Bulbs that last 4ever" stopped producing Lucas replacement sets some two years ago.

I've bought a set here, suitable for positive and negative earth, made by "I don't care who", and it's a pleasure not having to replace broken tail/brake light bulbs every 100 miles any more. This is the third season I ride with it.

Alan, do you have one and how is it? Is there a brightness difference?

I have one of the plug in Paul Goff replacement 1157 LED bulbs that I purchased from Walridge. It works well but is not as bright as I would expect or want. I'm very interested in the Bulbs That Last 4ever kit if I can track one down. Not sure if it's worth the cost. I think they run about $80.

Every bulb on mine except the H/L is replaced by LED, the only ones I found to be less bright than std were the indicators - less noticable in bright sunlight. I probably need to replace them with brighter.

What RF said....I've had that set-up for over a year now......very bright, very reliable, very little amperage draw...(less than 1)

I purchased mine from British Cycle website....they are one of the distributors for the company RF refers to....give them a call and see if they have any in stock.....they show them under their 'new products' link on their main page as of April 2008....

HTH,

Steve

I have since purchased the turn signal set to go with it, but am having too much fun riding to install just now...good winter project... :bigt:

Cheers,

Steve

Ger et al

Apparently the one that RFW recommended (above) is back in production.
After reading Prince and RFW recommendation, I ordered one today from British Cycle.
Really expensive, but seems to be the very best in brightness and is dedicated and designed for the Lucas unit only.

I'm convinced you bought quality, Boyd.
Price was a reason importers here did not buy from "bulbs" but from cheaper sources. The number of leds however is maximum in the "bulbs" version.

Steve,

I do not have any of the LED replacements yet, however, the nice thing about them is you can select various numbers of LEDs per application. As I recall the prices weren't outrageous either. Seems they range from approximately $3--$12 depending on the socket and number of LEDs per "bulb". They have a tech service number you can find from their site but don't know how helpful or grouchy they may be. I estimated I could do my Bonnie for approximately $75 which included all instrument, indicators, stop/tail, turn signal and an elctronic flasher. I haven't done it because every time I get close to doing it something breaks either with a vehicle or the house.

 HTH

I recently replaced my idiot lights in my headlamp with LED bulbs. Radio shack has these little bulb holders that slide right in to the old Lucas holders. Slick! They work great. Well, I haven't seen the oil indicator come on yet...and I hope I never do. I believe I used a 400 ohm resistor.
