I have a 68 Bonnie with Boyer Electronic ignition. When setting the idle of each carburetor individually, Is it ok to unplug one spark plug at the time without fear of ruining the Boyer black box as somebody told me????

In a previous thread, it was pointed out (by Mr. Healy, I believe) that pulling a spark plug wire may cause damage to your coil, and this is with breaker point ignition as well as EI. Tension builds up in the secondary coil which is seeking a path to ground, which it may find through some weakened insulation, especially in an older coil. This will in turn cause more damage to the coil.

This practice is ok if you ground the HT lead to be disabled. You may get some suggestions on exactly how to do this.

You can ground the removed ht lead by fitting another spark plug into the cap and resting it on the cylinder head, making sure it stays there.

make a jumper wire witha sparkplug cap on one end and an alligator clip on the other so you get a positive grounding. if you do lay the sparkplug on head make sure its far from the sparkplug hole. there is still gas in the carbs and it is possible for the gas vapor escaping to be ignited by the sparking plug. that'll scare the crap out of you at the very least.

You don't take the plugs out of the head. You use an extra plug.

Lot of good posts to this, but I want to also mention that for ME... I haven't had to do this. I have a 71 650 engine, and am running dual VM32 Mikunis. I have a "balance" tube connecting the two carbs. I really think this tube has added a lot to low rpm idling. In fact, I searched here on the archives in reference to a balance tube. Anyway. Both carbs are set the same for jets, etc, and both slides are properly adjusted, and with the balance tube there, the bike runs damn well just as is. Do you have a problem that may be prompting the need to dial in your carbs seperately?
